Montana – Mountain Resort

Villach, Austria
Nestled in a tranquil mountain landscape, Montana is a contemporary holiday retreat designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. The project blends traditional alpine character with refined modern architecture, using local materials, clean geometry, and an immersive connection to the environment. Thoughtfully positioned rooflines, generous glazing, and a fluid spatial concept create a home that feels both sheltered and open, an intimate refuge shaped by the mountains themselves.

“In the silence of the mountains, architecture becomes a language of calm.”
Celebrated with the German Design Award 2024 for Excellent Architecture, Montana embodies a delicate balance between tradition, innovation, and the luxury of peaceful invisibility.

The Architecture & Design Concept
Montana reimagines the classic chalet by shifting and layering its rooflines, giving the familiar form a distinctly modern silhouette. The design uses a dual, inverted material strategy: traditional stone shingles on the exterior transition into smooth cast concrete inside, while modern Trespa panels on the façade reveal warm natural wood within. This interplay of materials grounds the house in its mountain context while introducing a clean, contemporary edge. Large openings and movable wooden panels frame views and connect the living spaces with the landscape.

Spatial Organization
The main volume follows an open-plan layout that links the kitchen, living area, and optional indoor pool into one cohesive space. A separate room provides privacy when needed. The pool zone doubles as a relaxation area with lounge seating oriented toward the lake, perfect for quiet mornings or peaceful family evenings.

Interior Atmosphere
Gray tones, stone, wood, and concrete bring a refined “mountain cave” character, blending warmth with a modern aesthetic. Vertical lighting elements create height and rhythm throughout the interior. Furnishings by Poltrona Frau add subtle luxury, while custom-built pieces optimize space and complete the resort’s architectural identity.
